Biography:
Red Hare was a world renowned photographer whose career spanned a dynamic period of Pittsburgh's Renaissance from an industrial manufacturing base to the diversified modern city of today.
Born in Bloomington Indiana in 1927, his mother was chief librarian of Indiana University's Kinsey Library. After his Navy career in 1946 he enrolled in a photography course taught by an associate of Moholy-Nagy of the Bauhaus School of Design. There, He discovered Photography was about light.
Hare has photos published in many national magazines. At the Missouri photojournalism workshop he met Roy Stryker, which led him to Pittsburgh in 1950. His best known work includes the Pittsburgh Photographic Library series, a Jones & Laughlin Photo File series (now at Univ. of Louisville), images for National Geographic, Fortune, Life , Ladies Home Journal. and others. As a freelancer, Clyde Hare worked in advertising, public relations, industrial photography, design, and did exhibits, videos and lecturing. He is the subject of a 45 minute documentary film by filmmaker Kenny Love. He also taught at Carnegie Mellon University. He is the author of the book Clyde Hare's Pittsburgh, published by the Pittsburgh History & Landmarks Foundations in 1994.
